In order to put things in context, we need to bring in our prior knowledge, experiences, and expectations into a situation. Consider someone who understands English very well, but who has never seen or used a washing machine, but rather hand washed his/her clothes. Ask your students whether they expect such a person to make sense of the text if he/she were told that the text is about ‘doing the laundry’?
