Education, as distinct from indoctrination, conditioning, brain-washing etc., is marked by students having a concern for reasons and for the justification of beliefs. Science programmes in any scheme of liberal education will include discussion of the nature of science – its history, methodology, philosophy, social and cultural impacts, and its relation to other forms of knowledge. And all but the most impoverished technical programmes will also include aspects of the nature of science – scientific method, hypothesis generation and testing, and so on.
